SAM Sport

SAM would like to brainstorm with you about what is needed for a re-design of the playing field on the theme of (gender) equality. And that is desperately needed. A selection of the figures:

  • Only 10-15% of all sports media attention in the Netherlands goes to women, internationally even only 4–5%.
  • Women's sport receives only 10% of the total sponsorship budget in sport.
  • Looking at all sports together, female top athletes worldwide earn on average about 30% less than their male colleagues.
  • One third of federation boards in the Netherlands consists exclusively of men, and only 15% of coaches are women.
  • 66% of girls are attracted to sport by female athletes as role models, but the visibility of these role models is structurally low.

Together with women and men, girls and boys, we want to brainstorm about wishes, needs, chances and opportunities to get gender equality in the sports world more in balance. Always with a positive approach. Because 'what if' gets us further than 'why not'.

Your input is greatly appreciated and is anonymous. Our goal is to collect the input of all participants, analyze it and make connections to ultimately arrive at a supported discussion paper as a basis for a re-design of the playing field that we actively share with federations, associations, governments and other parties that are important to actually make the change possible.

On this page we have a number of great conversation starters ready for you. We have divided them into themes: inclusion, participation, leadership and visibility. You can do them all or pick one or more themes that appeal to you the most. All input and all ideas are welcome. On behalf of SAM: thank you for letting your voice be heard!

  5. 5
Make sure the phone is as much as possible IN THE MIDDLE of the group
  6. 6
During recording: DO NOT lock your phone!
Tip: Not talking for a moment? Or you don't want it to be recorded: Click PAUSE!
  7. 7
Is the conversation over, click STOP.

Your input is transcribed (live!) and you can manually change input afterwards if you are not satisfied with something. Your anonymous input is shared with the SAM community for further analysis and redesign of the playing field.

  • What is already working well and can we scale up?
  • How do you lower thresholds without losing quality?
How do we break persistent stereotypes in sport?
  • Which stereotypes do you encounter most often?
  • What does that do to the choices of young people?
  • Which (small) actions help to turn this around?
What role do parents, coaches and teachers play in equal opportunities?
  • What influence do their words and expectations have?
  • How can they break stereotypes?
  • What do they need for this?
02

Leadership

What do we win if more women lead in sport?
  • What does it yield if we have as many men as women in a board?
  • What qualities do women bring?
  • What qualities do men bring?
  • How do we make room for other leadership?
  • What support helps women in that growth?
03

Visibility

What if women's sport becomes just as visible as men's sport – what does that yield?
  • What would change for young girls?
  • What opportunities arise for sponsors, media and the public?
  • What can we do tomorrow to accelerate this?
What if sports media shed equal light on women and men?
  • Which stories are we missing now?
  • How does visibility influence young athletes?
  • What role can creators pick up immediately?
What if sponsors invest just as much in women's as in men's sport?
  • What opportunities does this offer for brands?
  • How does that change the position of female athletes?
  • Which step can a sponsor take right now?
04

Participation

What is needed to let female sports talent bloom to the max?
  • What guidance works for girls?
  • What does a sports program look like that starts from the girl herself?
  • What can sport learn from other sectors?
What if boys become ballerinos and girls professional footballers without judgment?
  • Which role models make this visible?
  • What are characteristics of an inspiring role model for you?
  • How does the environment react to such choices?
  • What can sports clubs and associations do to make certain choices normal?
